Gingivitis: what to know about symptoms, causes and treatment

Healthy gums are the foundation of every lasting and beautiful smile. Yet many people only see a dentist when inflammation has become a serious problem. We show you what to look out for and how to prevent the problem.

What is gingivitis?

Gingivitis is the most common oral disease, caused by bacterial plaque that builds up at the gum-tooth junction. If the plaque is not removed regularly, it hardens and turns into tartar, which can only be removed by professional dental cleaning.

Gingivitis is painless in most cases, so many people don't even know they have it - until the symptoms become clear.

What are the most common symptoms of gingivitis?

  • Bleeding while brushing or flossing
  • Red, swollen or sensitive gums
  • Receding gums, more visible gums
  • Bad breath that cannot be eliminated by brushing
  • More sensitive teeth to hot, cold or sweet foods
Important: If you experience any of these symptoms, don't wait. Treatment of gingivitis detected early is simple and effective - but if neglected, it can develop into periodontitis (deeper gum inflammation), which can lead to loosening of the teeth.

What causes gingivitis?

The primary cause is almost always poor oral hygiene. However, other factors can also increase the risk:

  • Smoking - significantly impairs the gums' defences
  • Diabetes and hormonal changes (e.g. pregnancy, menopause)
  • Dry mouth as a side effect of certain medicines
  • Genetic predisposition
  • Stress and weakened immune system

How can gingivitis be treated?

Treatment always starts by eliminating the underlying cause. In mild cases, professional scaling and Air flow treatment may be sufficient to remove plaque and tartar completely. In more advanced cases, curettage - the removal of dirt deposited in the gum pockets - may also be necessary.

The results are spectacular: as you can see in the picture, healthy pink gums can be restored. Inflammation is eliminated, bleeding stops and the supporting tissues around the teeth regenerate.

What can you do at home to prevent it?

  • Brush your teeth twice a day for at least 2 minutes
  • Use floss or a toothbrush once a day
  • You can include mouthwash in your routine
  • Avoid smoking and reduce your sugar intake
  • Have a check-up and professional scaling every 6 months
Professional periodontal treatment helps to reduce inflammation, restore gum health and protect the supporting tissues around the teeth. Beyond aesthetics, healthy gums are essential for long-term stability, comfort and overall oral health.
